Dummy burglar alarms
Are dummy burglar alarms a good idea? That depends on whether you think
you can outsmart the criminal mind. It is all about psychology. Yes, a dummy
alarm is a good idea because they are normally fixed outside the
property with a highly visible presence.
That is the message the silently represent, which is to keep away. So
dummy alarms can be seen by all. But, not everyone knows if yours is
real or not.
Taking on the mindset of the criminal for a moment, and arguably, the
security conscious would need to do that anyway to an extent. I think
that if I could see a property with a burglar alarm box fixed to the
outside wall, I would not take the chance that is was fake.
Faced with the choice of breaking into a house with or without a dummy
alarm, I know which option I would choose, and it would not be the
alarmed house.
On the downside, whenever you leave your property for any length of
time, you must be aware that the property is vulnerable to a break in
because the alarm is false. It is a layer of protection which in
reality is not there. That is the chance you take.
You then might have to face the awful prospect of being broken into and
living with the knowledge that "if only I had installed a live dummy
burglar alarm." In the final analysis you have to make the decision.
Kiddology is fine when it works, but disastrous when it fails.
That said, my conclusion is that in the short term dummy burglar alarms
are probably alright, but long term it is wiser to consider a fully
operational burglar
alarm system. However, the choice is yours.
